IB Biology: SL and HL
Explore what IB Biology covers, compare SL and HL syllabus requirements, and choose your course. Follow the first-assessment-2025 syllabus from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems.
What you study in IB Biology
IB Biology connects the processes inside living cells to the behaviour of organisms and changes in ecosystems. Its syllabus uses four themes: unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. Studying the subject means explaining those connections, testing ideas against evidence and communicating precise biological reasoning.
Choosing SL or HL is a choice of course scope, not a sequence of two courses. Compare the requirements below and discuss your subject combination, school provision and any published university entry requirements with your teacher or adviser. If you are already enrolled, open your registered level using the course links above.
To begin studying on EduNinja, open your SL or HL course and use its exact syllabus map. Start with Diagnostic when you need to locate weaker areas, or go directly to a known topic and use Practice. Review your topic mastery in the course knowledge view, revisit the relevant explanations and practise again. Your selected level keeps the learning work connected to the syllabus you are studying.
- Connect a mechanism to its effectsFor an enzyme investigation, explain how substrate binding and active-site structure affect reaction rate. Connect a molecular explanation to the measured outcome instead of memorising an isolated definition.
- Interpret biological dataCompare an enzyme-rate graph with its temperature or pH conditions. Separate the pattern you can describe from the mechanism you can explain, and consider whether the results support your prediction.
- Investigate and evaluate evidenceIdentify independent and dependent variables, control other conditions and repeat measurements. Explain what uncertainty or an uncontrolled variable means for your conclusion. These habits support practical work and the scientific investigation at both levels.

Before you choose IB Biology SL or HL
The syllabus first assessed in 2025. The year identifies the course version, rather than limiting it to the 2025 exam session. Check your school’s syllabus and registered level before using older notes or a topic checklist from a previous course.
SL and HL are alternative levels in the Diploma Programme, not two consecutive stages. Choose the course you are registered for. If you are considering a change of level, discuss the additional syllabus scope and your school’s arrangements with your teacher.
Consider the scope comparison, your overall Diploma subject combination and the teaching time available. Check specific entry requirements directly with the universities and programmes you are considering; a general subject guide cannot establish those requirements for you.
No. In photosynthesis, both levels study pigments, spectra and limiting factors; HL also studies photosystems and the reactions linking light energy to carbon fixation. Some topics have the same required scope, while six whole topics are HL only. The comparison distinguishes these cases.
Open your registered SL or HL course. If you know the topic you need, start from its syllabus map and practise that scope. If you are unsure where your gaps are, use the course’s Diagnostic entry, then revisit explanations and practise the weaker topics. Use the exact course page for its assessment details and resource links.
